A further 30 teams have qualified for relay events at the World Athletics Championships Tokyo 25 following the final day of action at the World Athletics Relays Guangzhou 25 on Sunday (11).
Six teams in each of the women&rsquo;s and men&rsquo;s 4x100m and 4x400m plus the mixed 4x400m booked their places for Tokyo on day two. The <a href="https://worldathletics.org/competitions/world-athletics-relays/guangzhou25/news/press-releases/first-40-relay-teams-qualified-wch-tokyo-25" target="_blank" rel="noopener">first 40 qualified teams were confirmed on Saturday</a> and the final 30 on Sunday, following a second World Championships qualifying round for teams that missed out on day one.
Teams that qualified on Saturday also progressed to their respective World Relays finals in Guangzhou, when they raced for prize money and preferential World Championships lane seeding positions.
Four federations &ndash; Belgium, France, Great Britain &amp; Northern Ireland and USA &ndash; each qualified a full five teams for Tokyo, while another five &ndash; Canada, China, Germany, Italy and Poland &ndash; qualified four each.
USA set a championship record of 3:09.54 to win the <a href="https://worldathletics.org/competitions/world-athletics-relays/guangzhou25/news/report/guangzhou-25-report-4x400m-final" target="_blank" rel="noopener">mixed 4x400m</a>, while Spain&rsquo;s athletes stormed to another national record to win the <a href="https://worldathletics.org/competitions/world-athletics-relays/guangzhou25/news/report/guangzhou-25-report-4x400m-final" target="_blank" rel="noopener">women&rsquo;s 4x400m</a> in 3:24.13. South Africa won the <a href="https://worldathletics.org/competitions/world-athletics-relays/guangzhou25/news/report/guangzhou-25-report-4x400m-final" target="_blank" rel="noopener">men&rsquo;s 4x400m</a> in a world lead of 2:57.50, while the <a href="https://worldathletics.org/competitions/world-athletics-relays/guangzhou25/news/report/guangzhou-25-report-4x100m-finals" target="_blank" rel="noopener">4x100m</a> crowns were claimed by Great Britain &amp; NI for the women in 42.21 and South Africa for the men in a world lead of 37.61.
The <a href="https://worldathletics.org/competitions/world-athletics-relays/guangzhou25/news/report/guangzhou-25-report-4x100m-finals" target="_blank" rel="noopener">mixed 4x100m</a> also made its global debut in Guangzhou and Canada claimed the inaugural World Relays crown, winning the final in 40.30.
While most of the relay tickets for Tokyo have now been secured, teams that missed out in Guangzhou do still have a chance to qualify. A further two World Championships places in each of the five disciplines will be awarded based on top lists during the qualification period (25 February 2024 to 24 August 2025).

Governor Yuriko Koike stated, "The countdown has truly begun. With just four months to go until the World Athletics Championships, excitement in Tokyo is growing by the day. Ticket sales have been very strong." She expressed her commitment to further accelerating preparations in close cooperation with the World Athletics Championships Tokyo 25 Local Organising Committee.
She also emphasised Tokyo&rsquo;s efforts to engage future generations, saying, "In partnership with the Local Organising Committee, Tokyo is implementing various initiatives for children, including inviting them to watch the event, offering hands-on athletic experiences at the Japan National Stadium, and involving them in the operation of the event. We aim to make this Championship a memorable one that inspires dreams in children."

Creating a Shared Voice: Messages of encouragement and support will be collected from children and communities, then prominently displayed within the competition venues to help energise both athletes and spectators while fostering a strong sense of inclusion and unity.
Passing the Baton: As part of WCH Tokyo 25&rsquo;s Baton Project, relay batons will be donated to all 1,400 elementary schools across Tokyo, encouraging students to organise and participate in their own relay events. This grassroots initiative aims to deepen young people&rsquo;s connection to athletics, promote teamwork and physical activity, and symbolise the passing of inspiration and energy from one generation to the next.

The WCH Tokyo 25 Sustainability Plan outlines our approach to delivering an environmentally and socially responsible World Championships. Developed in collaboration with event sponsors and the Tokyo Metropolitan Government, this plan reflects our shared ambition to leave a meaningful legacy for future international sporting events.
Anchored by the six sustainability pillars that frame the World Athletics Sustainability Strategy - Leadership, Sustainable Production and Consumption, Climate Change and Carbon, Local Environment and Air Quality, Global Equality, and Diversity, Accessibility and Well-being - the WCH Tokyo 25 Sustainability Plan builds on the vision set out in our Basic Plan. Our goal: to establish a new global benchmark for sustainable sports events, known as the Tokyo Model.
In addition to minimising our environmental footprint, WCH Tokyo 25 is committed to championing diversity, equity, and transparency throughout its planning and operations.

Harnessing Next-Generation Solar Technology
Garden lights featuring cutting-edge solar cells are being installed around the Japan National Stadium. These lights will remain in place after the Championships, serving the local community and symbolising a lasting contribution to urban sustainability.
Expanding the Use of Biofuels
Temporary broadcast generators at the stadium will be powered by biofuels, reducing dependency on fossil fuels. A portion of the official vehicle fleet will also run on biofuel, further lowering the event&rsquo;s carbon footprint.
Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) from Recycled Cooking Oil
Flights transporting athletes will use Sustainable Aviation Fuel derived from waste cooking oil collected in Tokyo &mdash; a pioneering initiative that supports the global push toward greener air travel.
Reducing CO₂ Emissions Through Renewable Energy and Offsetting
All electricity purchased for the Championships will be certified renewable, sourced via green power certificates. In addition, carbon offsetting projects, supported by official partners, will help neutralise unavoidable emissions generated during the event.

<h3>Resource Circulation, Sustainable Procurement and Waste Reduction</h3>
Sustainable Sourcing and Smarter Waste Management
A dedicated sustainable procurement policy is guiding all sourcing decisions. Wherever possible, items are being rented or leased to reduce waste. Environmentally responsible products are prioritised when purchases are determined to be necessary. After the Championships, sporting equipment will be reused or appropriately redistributed in line with asset disposal procedures. Spectators will be encouraged to bring reusable water bottles, and returnable bottle schemes are being explored in select areas. WCH Tokyo 25 is also working to minimise single-use plastics in food and beverage packaging.
Tackling Food Waste with Smarter Planning
To cut down on waste, volunteers will receive prepaid cards instead of catered meals, giving them more flexibility while reducing unnecessary food preparation. Meals for staff and officials will be portioned carefully, and frozen ingredients will be used strategically. Unused food will be recycled or repurposed wherever possible.

<h3>Environmental Enhancements</h3>
Community Engagement and Local Action
A &ldquo;plogging&rdquo; initiative (jogging while picking up litter) will be held around the Japan National Stadium in partnership with sponsors, encouraging community participation in environmental cleanup efforts.

Working alongside World Athletics, we will install air quality monitoring systems at the stadium. This real-time data will be available to athletes and staff, contributing to a safer and healthier competition environment.

As momentum builds for the World Athletics Championships Tokyo 25, the Local Organising Committee, in partnership with World Athletics, hosted a two-day site visit for team leaders from around the globe.
Member federation representatives from 25 countries and regions gathered in Tokyo to get a firsthand look at key competition and training facilities. Ahead of the on-site inspections, the LOC held a livestreamed briefing session, sharing essential updates and progress reports with athletics federations worldwide.
In his opening remarks, LOC President Mitsugi Ogata welcomed participants, saying:
"The venues you&rsquo;ll be visiting today, including the Japan National Stadium, warm-up areas, and team hotels, are being carefully prepared to provide athletes with the best possible environment to perform at their peak. Our entire team is committed to offering you a warm welcome with Japan&rsquo;s signature hospitality. We&rsquo;ll do everything we can to ensure the athletes can focus fully on their performance&rdquo;.
Over the course of the visit, team leaders toured the Japan National Stadium, training facilities, team accommodations and the race walk course, closely examining venue layouts, athlete flow routes, and operational setups to ensure a smooth and athlete-centered Championships.
To wrap up the visit on a high note, official mascot Riku One made a special appearance, bringing smiles and a touch of fun as participants looked ahead to returning in September.
The valuable feedback and insights gathered during the visit will be instrumental in fine-tuning preparations for Tokyo 25.

As momentum builds for the World Athletics Championships Tokyo 25, the Local Organising Committee, in partnership with World Athletics, hosted a two-day site visit for team leaders from around the globe.

Team Leaders’ Site Visit Held Ahead of World Athletics Championships Tokyo 25

Tickets for the DAY 8 (20 September) evening session of the World Athletics Championships Tokyo 25, featuring the highly anticipated women&rsquo;s javelin final, have officially sold out. Among the key medal contenders is Haruka Kitaguchi, who has already secured her spot on the Japanese national team and is aiming for gold.
With excitement building, tickets for the Day 7 (19 September) evening session, which includes the women&rsquo;s javelin qualification round, are also selling fast and are now available exclusively through the official ticket sales website. Don&rsquo;t miss this opportunity to witness Kitaguchi&rsquo;s journey live.
<h3>Japanese marathon runners confirmed for WCH Tokyo 25!&nbsp;</h3>
On 26 March, the five athletes representing Japan in the men's and women's marathon were officially selected. The women&rsquo;s marathon will take place on Day 2 (14 September) in the morning session, while the men&rsquo;s marathon will be held on Day 3 (15 September) in the morning session. Both races will start and finish at the Japan National Stadium. Don't miss the chance to witness Japan's top runners chase glory and make history!

Even for sold-out sessions, additional tickets may become available due to updates in event planning and venue logistics. This platform allows ticket holders who can no longer attend their ticketed event to resell their tickets at face value to other eager fans. More details will be announced soon.

The overall winner of the 35km at the All-Japan Race Walking Championships - part of the World Athletics Race Walking Tour - in Nomi on Sunday (16) was a big surprise.
At 34, Hayato Katsuki produced the race of his life to win handsomely in 2:24:38, earning a place on Japan&rsquo;s team for the World Championships on home soil in September.
Katsuki struggled at one point on the sodden course where it rained from start to finish, but was left beaming over the last one-kilometre circuit when victory was assured. At 31km, he made a break and never looked back to finish with a massive PB by almost two minutes.
Australia's Olivia Sandery took the women's 35km title in an Oceanian record of 2:42:40, while Yukiko Umeno was the leading Japanese finisher in 2:46:52.
World Championship berths were on offer for Japanese race walkers in the 35km, as well as another chance to qualify at the shorter 20km in a second group of races. Any Japanese race walker wanting a place on the team in the 35km had to finish inside 2:26:00 (men) and 2:45 (women).
Factor in the Asian Championships; the open race, the All Japan Race Walking title, plus additional 10km races, and there was enough silverware on the presentation table to make it groan.
There was also a healthy showing from other countries, particularly Australia, whose athletes were likewise hoping to make an impression on selectors.
The 35km field had the course all to themselves following an 8am start on a grim morning of steady rain and temperatures of 7C.
A group of seven hit the first kilometre in 4:15 including all the main Japanese contenders and Australians Rhydian Cowley and Tim Fraser alongside Mexico&rsquo;s Noel Chama.
They reached 5km in a little over 21 minutes, by which time they were already lapping women who started at the same time.
That group of seven were trailed by another seven just a few metres behind. They quickly closed the gap only to find the original seven plus two forging another small gap.
Andres Nunez from Mexico had joined the throng wearing ear warmers to underline the damp conditions. As quickly as the biggish group came, it went.
Another injection of pace whittled the leaders to six at 10km, including pre-race favourite Satoshi Maruo, Kazuki Takahashi, Katsuki, Tomohiro Noda, Nunez and Cowley in 41:32; the second group had lost 13 seconds.
The same six appeared joined at the hip for the next 5km to make a 15km split of 1:01:58. Any other contender was by now too far back to make a difference.
The next major change came on lap 18 with Katsuki and Cowley forced to give way, but in the case of the Japanese, only for a 1km lap. Katsuki sprinted to join the other four. It was 1:22:11 at 20km, and this time Noda found himself detached.
With 13km to go, Maruo had clearly held off long enough and set off for home. Katsuki was having none of it, and quickly closed the gap with Nunez also giving chase. In fact, it was Takahashi who became the casualty.
Cowley, struggling on his own 25 metres off the back, seemed to find the rain a welcome refreshment as he worked his way back to the front a little after 25km timed at 1:42:32 for the leaders. This time it looked as if the Australian and Katskuki meant business.
There was also daylight between Maruo and Nunez with 2:03:15 for the two in front at 30km with an eight-second gap to third and fourth. However, that effort by Cowley had taken its toll.
Katsuki made yet another attempt to break through, and this time it really was decisive. Cowley slipped back as the leader soared through and on his own for the last 3km while Nunez got a second wind to record 2:25:08, with Maruo, 2:25:19, overtaking a tired Cowley right at the end.

In the women&rsquo;s 35km, Australia's Olivia Sandery underlined her potential with an overall win in 2:42:40.
She set the previous Oceanian record in December with 2:45:31, but in Nomi she decimated it in a strong, steady race with a final burst of 23:04 for the last 5km.
In contrast, Colombia&rsquo;s 2021 Olympic silver medallist Sandra Lorena went for broke at the outset, and paid for it.
Her last two 5km splits (24:05) and (25:38) saw Sandery take advantage. Even so, Lorena's 2:44:17 clocking was still better than her previous 2:46:44 from October.

Among the Japanese contenders, Hitomi Shimoka made a strong impression early on, but Yukiko Umeno drew level at about 13km and went on to finish third overall in 2:46:53; sadly outside her country&rsquo;s qualification mark. Australia&rsquo;s Alana Pitcher came through strongly to take fourth, also in a PB.
In the men&rsquo;s 20km, Yuta Koga prevailed in a speedy 1:18:48 to go with his 1:18:26 in Kobe in February, and 20-year-old Ning Jinlin from China shattered her PB by close to three minutes with 1:30:03 for the overall win.

PIA Corporation has been announced as the official commercial hospitality provider and agent for the&nbsp;World Athletics Championships Tokyo 25.
The Japan-based ticketing services company is also the general ticketing provider and an event supporter in the ticketing services category for the WCH Tokyo 25, which will be held in the Japanese capital from 13 to 21 September.
